The Cleveland Plain Dealer weighed in with their Speaker's vote analysis today. They did a much better job in reporting than the Columbus Dispatch did yesterday. However, here's my personal take:
Ryan Smith is counting on everyone who voted for him in the spring plus two new members coming to the House. Meanwhile, statehouse sources tell me that Smith's support has eroded significantly among those returning members. In fact, it is believed that at least 7 of those members now support Larry Householder.
Why?
Most likely it is because Ryan Smith made lots of promises to House Members about letting several floor votes take place during the lame duck session. Smith, like other moderates, believed that Mike DeWine would not be elected Governor. Now, Smith is waffling on all of the promises he made because he's afraid of embarrassing the incoming Governor with political show votes.
That's also why Smith is pushing for a quick vote now before his promises and his support unravels. More realistically a vote will not take place until any recounts in close races are determined.
Here's another reason why his support may be eroding. Word around Broad and High is that Ryan Smith has offered the coveted post of Finance Chairman to 4 different people in an effort to obtain their votes. He must think that no one ever talks to each other.
